Software update preference pane for macOS 10.14

Software Update Pane macOS 10.14

In years past, operating system and app updates for your Mac came exclusively from the App Store. While this is still true for apps, macOS 10.14 Mojave shows that Apple has moved its OS updates to a new location found in the Software Update preference pane in your System Preferences (System Preferences > Software Update). Instead of the multi-step App Store process, you'll simply need to check your version of macOS and access available updates in the pane. If there's an update there will be an Update Now button to click, and if not, you're up to date! Within this pane, you can also select your preferences when it comes to handling your system and application updates. We advise not selecting “Automatically keep my Mac up to date” because updates might come at an inconvenient time for you. Instead of playing update roulette with your Mac, click "Advanced" and then select “Check for updates” and “Install system data files and security updates”—they’re important. So long as you're good on drive space, selecting “Download new updates when available” is fine, which will make updating faster. Just make sure to deselect “Install macOS updates” and “Install app updates from the App Store”, giving you complete control of when to update.
